TERO SAARINEN COMPANY PERFORMS AT TOP NORTH AMERICAN FESTIVAL IN JULY

Tero Saarinen Company is to appear at the USA’s biggest and most prestigious dance festival July 11–15. The Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival celebrates its 80th anniversary this year. The celebratory season includes choreographer Tero Saarinen’s acclaimed Borrowed Light, staged in collaboration with the American early music ensemble, The Boston Camerata. Borrowed Light received its US premiere at Jacob’s Pillow six years ago, and is now returning – by popular demand.

The six performances by Tero Saarinen Company and The Boston Camerata will be at the Ted Shawn Theatre. The 600-seat theatre, opened in 1942, is the first performance space designed specifically for dance in the USA. Jacob’s Pillow, in Becket, Massachusetts, is listed as a National Historic Landmark, and was last year awarded a National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama. The Festival attracts 80,000–90,000 visitors each year.

Borrowed Light received its premiere in France in 2004, and has since toured to 11 countries. Tero Saarinen got the inspiration for the work from the originally English Protestant Shaker sect, whose members moved to the USA at the end of the 18th century, to New England, also the home of Jacob’s Pillow. Alongside Saarinen, the dancers in Borrowed Light are Henrikki Heikkilä, Annika Hyvärinen, Carl Knif, Natasha Lommi, Pekka Louhio, Sini Länsivuori and Maria Nurmela. The music is based on original Shaker music, which Joel Cohen has adapted for eight singers from The Boston Camerata. Lighting and set design are by Mikki Kunttu, costume design by Erika Turunen and sound design by Heikki Iso-Ahola.
