The Finnish diplomatic missions assist Finnish citizens and foreigners permanently living in Finland in crisis situations abroad. The United States government is responsible for all citizens in their jurisdiction so in case of a crisis situation one should comply with the instructions given by the local authorities and follow the local media.

If you are travelling to the United States or living in the country permanently, it is recommendable to read the preparedness plans below. Everyone is responsible for their own safety and familiarizing oneself with the proper procedures may increase the likelihood of surviving a crisis situation.

The Finnish Embassy's preparedness plan for Finns living in the areas of Washington D.C., Virginia and Maryland:

The New York Consulate General's preparedness plan for Finns residing in its consular district (AL, AR, CT, DE, FL, GA, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, LA, ME, MA, MI, MN, MS, MO, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, PR, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, VT, WV, WI, Virgin Island):

The Los Angeles Consulate General's preparedness plan for Finns residing in its consular district (AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, NM, NV, MT, OR, UT, WA, WY):

Travel notification

It is recommended that Finnish citizens abroad provide their contact information in the United States by using the travel notification service www.matkustusilmoitus.fi launched by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. In a crisis situation it is also recommended to inform the next of kin and the Finnish foreign mission one’s situation.
